Campaign focusing on ensuring food availability throughout the year and increased nutrition for underprivileged communities.

Many of the underprivileged communities like the tribals, dalits, small and marginal farmers do not have access to adequate nutritious food the year around, leading to widespread malnutrition among them. Also, these communities have been left out of the mainstream development processes. Fulfilment of basic needs like food, education and health, has been a distant reality for many of them. The government has enacted progressive legislations like Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) that guarantees 100 days of work to each rural household; and the Forest Rights Act which provides ownership over agricultural land and village forests but these typically do not reach them. Even where the communities have gained legal ownership over agricultural land, the productivity is low. The Government through the Public Distribution systems seeks to provide subsidised food to the poor but this system does not work effectively.

Our campaign ‘No Hunger, More Nutrition’ aims to address these issues and improve the food availability and nutrition intake of these communities through sustainable agricultural practices in India.

Improve the Nutritional food intake of 1 Underprivileged family through Vegetable Garden for 1 year – Rs. 1850

Many of the poor do not have access to adequate nutritious food the year around. This is one of the causes of the prevalence of high rates of malnutrition among them.

Your donation will partly contribute towards promoting vegetable gardens to enhance intake of nutritional food. In each village, 30 women will be supported to develop vegetable gardens in their backyard. One time support will be provided for vegetable seeds, land preparation, and preparation of water channels. Women will be encouraged to grow a variety of vegetables. This will provide the family access to diverse nutritious food.

The Local NGO staff will select the villages and women who are interested in carrying out this activity. The staff will provide guidance to the women on land preparation and development of water channels. They will also purchase good quality vegetable seeds and provide it to the women. They will visit the vegetable gardens on a periodic basis and help address pest and other problems being faced by the women farmers.

AfC will work with our implementation partner which will be a local NGO having good know-how and local recognition to implement this project. AfC staff will regularly monitor the programme progress and finances and help address the challenges being faced in project implementation.

Improve livelihood and food security of 1 forest dwelling tribal family through increased agricultural productivity and access to public distribution system (PDS) – Rs. 1500

The tribals and other forest dwelling communities have been left out of the mainstream development processes. Fulfilment of basic needs like food, education, health has been a distant reality for many of them. The government has enacted progressive legislations like Mahatama Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) which guarantees 100 days of work to each rural household and the Forest Rights Act which provides ownership over agricultural land and village forests but these do not reach the tribals. Even where the tribals  have gained legal ownership over agricultural land the productivity is low. The Government through the Public Distribution systems seeks to provide subsidised food to the poor but this system does not work effectively.

Your donation will partly contribute towards providing financial support to two development fellows that will work directly with the community groups to improve their food security. The fellows will organize meetings to inform the community members about the Acts. They will support the community to get job cards ( a requisite to get work under MGNREGA), prepare resource development plans, file applications and  prepare technical estimates  to access government MGNREGA funds for development of individual farm lands. They will supervise technical works such as land leveling, farm bunding and creation of farm ponds, wells etc. They will support the community groups in measuring the work done which will contribute to timely payment and plugging of financial leakages. They will also generate awareness about governments Public Distribution System and help the poor access the subsidized food meant for them.

AfC will work with our implementation partner which will be a local NGO having good know-how and local recognition to implement this project. AfC staff will regularly monitor the programme progress and finances and help address the challenges being faced in project implementation. AfC will also help the local NGO design the training programmes for the community members. Development fellows will be employees of the local NGOs.
